Yes! While not intended as a primary heat source, our fireplaces will produce up to the equivalent of 3Kw of heat. This is similar to an electric heater and is more than enough to heat up a normal size living room, bathroom or bedroom.
Q- How long does the gel last for?
Each fireplace has 3 x 250ml containers which you can fill with gel from our 1 litre refill bottles. Most customers choose to run just one burner (it can actually get quite warm, even with 1 running). Room temperature, draughts and humidity can influence the burn rate, but we’d generally expect 1 litre to last up to 6 hours.
Q – Where can I buy gel fuel refills?
We have been supplying FireSource fire gel to the UK market since 2007 and we keep it in stock all year round. Similar products are available from garden centres, other online companies and occasionally John Lewis and Next (usually seasonal). Quality can vary, so you should be careful of unknown brands or very cheap gel products. If in doubt, please feel free to contact us.
Q – Can I use ethanol biofuel in a gel fireplace?
Our gel fireplaces can also be run on ethanol biofuel (liquid). Fire gel is biofuel ethanol based, but has a gelling agent and natural colouring added to enhance the colour of the flame and to slow the burn rate. Fire gel also makes a gentle crackling noise, just like a real wood fire! Liquid ethanol can also be used, but you may notice the flame is sligtly more blueish before the fire reaches full temperature when it will then appear orange and it doesn’t crackle. However, both fuels are safe to use in the fireplace.
The summer is here and it is time to spend time outdoors. You could use a firebowl to light up your time there.
Firebowls or gel burners are great to use outdoors, they add atmosphere to your garden for an evening party. They are also wonderful as a centrepiece for a romantic dinner.
However, there is an even better reason to use a firebowl in your garden. You could use it as an insect repellent and add some scent to your garden at the same time.
Citronella is an essential oil obtained from a variety of scented grasses that grow in tropical areas like Sri Lanka. This essential oil has been cultivated for a while to be used in the production of soaps, cleaning products and especially insect repellents.
If you are planning on using a firebowl or looking for refills for an existing one, you can find a version of Firegel with citronella essential oil in our shop.
After a lot of research, you have decided that you would like to purchase an ethanol fireplace. Now you can start thinking of the best design. You just found the one you like and then you realise there are two versions of the same fireplace, a gel and a liquid version, now what to do?
We have created a comparison list to make your decision easier.
Gel ethanol fireplace
Liquid ethanol fireplace
1 to 1.5 hours when using 450m – 500ml reservoirs.
2 to 2.5 hours when using 250ml reservoirs.
Similar to gel version if using standard reservoirs (see gel version).
Up to 6 hours only if using a special compartment specially designed, prices start from around £500 for the unit alone.
No, but flames sound
Every so often
Easy to refill
Colour of flames
Equivalent of 900 watts for every 500ml reservoir, therefore if using 3 reservoirs, heat output around 2700watts, similar to an electric heater.
Depends on the size of the reservoir, the bigger the more heat it produces/ more fuel is consumes.
Unit prices are usually more affordable than liquid versions.
Liquid is very similar to water, therefore needs extra care to avoid confusion.
The UK market offers a more affordable prices for gel ethanol refills than liquid ethanol.
Gel ethanol fireplaces have been in use for more than 20 years.
Relatively new product.
We really hope this chart helps you decide the right type of ethanol fireplace for you.
Whatever you choose, an ethanol fireplace will add style and atmosphere to any room in your home.
You can see FireSource fire gel live on stage during performances of Shraddha at the Soho Theatre, London from 17 – 21st November 2009.
We’ve noticed a number of theatres across the country placing orders for FireSource gel fuel to be used on stage during their performances.
Fire gel, while designed for use at home as a clean, smokeless solution to enable people to enjoy a real flame fire without a chimney or a flue is ideal for on stage use as it offers a safe and inexpensive alternative to gas or wood (which would fill the theatre with smoke!) and of course its clean burning, smokeless and produces a large, rich yellow flame very quickly. It can also be extinguished quickly without any special equipment. Ideal for a short scene which demands a totally realistic real flame fire.
The video below captures a short scene during Shraddha performed at the Soho Theatre.
The story is set in Stratford, East London and tells the story a family who have been affected by construction works for the London 2012 Olympic Games and found themselves moved on to make way for the new stadium. This scene depicts a campfire created by some of the former residents who have been made homeless by the construction works.
Candela Interiors is pleased to assist the Soho Theatre Company.
These days stainless steel is incredibly popular, from fridge freezers to plant pots, its present in all sorts of places in our homes. Several of our feature fireplaces are part or all brushed stainless steel, such as the Milan, Edge and Eclipse gel fireplaces.
So how do you keep it clean and shiny? What about those sticky fingerprints left by the kids?
Many cleaning products are too harsh or abrasive for brushed stainless steel and can actually harm the finish of your fireplace.
A cheap and easy tip for maintaining the stainless steel areas is to use a few drops of baby oil on a soft, lint free cloth. Gently clean the stainless steel and always work in the direction of the brush.
